[Click HERE for photos] The vibrations from workers jack-hammering an old school administration building’s balcony for removal caused an asbestos-insulated ceiling to partially collapse Friday, showering laborers with debris and causing them to suffer cuts and bruises, authorities said. The building’s owner, United Talmudical Academy religious school, lacked a village permit to take down the mezzanine level of the South Main Street building and has been issued violation notices and a stop work order, authorities said. Now that taxpayers in East Ramapo have rejected a proposed $191.9 million spending plan for next year, anything’s on the table at the school district — including a revote on the same budget, a revote on a modified budget or a contingency plan. The solid “no” vote Tuesday night — 7,798 to 5,742, according to unofficial results — makes East Ramapo the sole district out of 54 in Rockland, Westchester and Putnam counties to have its budget defeated. This is the third year in a row the district has faced a budget defeat. The budget as it stands includes the elimination of full-day kindergarten and nearly 100 layoffs on top of the 256 staff positions axed in the past four years. It also means fewer high school elective courses and less funding for sports, extracurricular activities and elementary music lessons. Full Story »

Turnout in the Jewish Community was lower by approximately 20% compared to last year’s 9,700-vote showing. However, turnout among other groups also fell. Last year’s split was 9,700 to 7,800. This year’s difference between both sides is likely closer in actual votes. Eli Salomon won another three-year term to the nine-member Board, while one Jewish Candidate won the seat of outgoing Board president Moshe Kohn. In addition, the Jewish Community picked up a seat held until now by union-friendly member that was appointed by the majority Jewish Board members last year yet lost the confidence of the tax paying, pro-special education Jewish Community. Participants at a Monday evening meeting of Preserve Ramapo followers, Union activists, and rabble rousers in the East Ramapo Central School District, plotted a major Voter Intimidation campaign against Jewish voters during Tuesday’s School Board/Budget elections. The above forces registered a countless amount of people as “Poll Watchers,” placing them next to voters with a “right” to raise objections to any person’s vote. Such votes may need to be placed “aside” until the dispute is settled. During the 2011 School Vote, poll watchers demanded that women with strollers or fathers with younger children should stay outside the voting buildings with the excuse that it’s not legal to enter. As a result, dozens of Jews were disenfranchised from voting. Making things worse, the voter rolls books will not have the signature comparisons available as it usually does. This may give yet another reason for the detractors to delay the voting, and cause long lines with the goal that Jewish Voters whose strongest turnout accumulates late afternoon and into the evening, will leave polling stations before actually voting. Jewish Community Activists – in preparation to this chaos – lined up attorneys to ensure that voters don’t get disenfranchised from their voting rights. In addition, Activists are urging people to vote earlier than regular to dilute the expected backup in the final hours of voting. Full Story » |
