Indian Point 2 Shutdown Cause Still Unknown

The cause of the generator malfunction that shut down one of the nuclear reactors at Indian Point Wednesday remains under investigation, a spokesman for the Nuclear Regulatory Commission said this morning. A loss of voltage in the generator tripped a turbine, which caused Indian Point 2’s reactor to stop operating, NRC spokesman Neil Sheehan said. There was no release of radioactivity during the shutdown.

Indian Point 3, the other reactor at the plant in Buchanan, continues to operate.

Wednesday’s shutdown of Indian Point 2 was the first unplanned shutdown of that reactor since November 2010.

Plant owner Entergy Nuclear is in the midst of seeking a renewal of each reactor’s 20-year operating license. The current licenses expire in 2013 and 2015.
