Man survives jump from Tappan Zee Bridge

A 30-year-old man survived an estimated 30-foot jump early Saturday from the lower end of the Tappan Zee Bridge.

Firefighters pulled the unidentified man from the water at 3:34 a.m. Boats from the Nyack, Piermont and Tarrytown fire departments responded to the emergency call.

The man jumped from the southbound side of the span, authorities said. The man told authorities he was despondent. He jumped from the causeway, about a half-mile out on the Hudson River and 30 feet above the water, Nyack Fire Department Chief Jim Petriello said.

“It’s a pretty good fall but survivable,” Petriello said. “I don’t believe he had any major injuries. We took him to shore and the Nyack ambulance took him to Nyack Hospital.”

Petriello said he didn’t have information on the man, who was not charged with a crime by the state police in Tarrytown. The state police investigate incidents on the Tappan Zee Bridge.

Several people have jumped from the bridge this year or attempted to jump.
