An off-duty New York City police officer who died in a crash on the Palisades Interstate Parkway in Nanuet on Sunday was struck by a passing car as she was lying on the roadway, according to State Police. Investigators are seeking witnesses to the accident to help in their probe of the death of Esther Sanzo, 37, of Manhattan.
A 2008 Ford SUV driven by Sanzo southbound on the parkway near the Exit 8 interchange hit a guard rail in the center median. Sanzo was ejected from the vehicle in the crash and landed on the roadway.
State Police say their investigation had revealed that Sanzo was struck by another vehicle in the left lane of the southbound parkway, just north of the Route 59 bridge.
When she was thrown from the vehicle, the SUV continued south until it hit the bridge.
Police are requesting that any witness who may have observed this accident contact Investigator Brendan J. Tumulty Jr. at 845-364-0200. The Rockland County Medical Examiner is conducting a post mortem autopsy to determine cause of death and or any other medically related issues.
