A New Hempstead couple on a cross-country trip hopes to raise awareness and support of American Jews serving in the U.S. military.
Shimi and Yudit Fuerst plan to set out Tuesday for a journey that will take them across the U.S. with stops along the way to tell people about Jews in the military, as well as the outreach efforts of the nonprofit Kosher Troops.
The organization sends care packages to Jewish-Americans troops around the world, with shipments going out weekly and for holidays such as Rosh Hashanah, Passover and Purim.
The Fuersts, both 20, spent today completing their packing and loading of the souped-up SUV they will drive.
Why souped-up?
The couple plans to travel along dirt roads for most of the trip, relying on routes taken by dirt bikes, ATVs and dune buggies, but never, it is believed, by an SUV for the entire distance.
“We decided, if we’re going to do it, why not do it to raise awareness,” Shimi Fuerst said.
