On Friday August 24, 2012 the Ramapo Police Department was called to CVS Pharmacy at 274 Old Nyack Turnpike in the Town of Ramapo for a report of parties that had shoplifted merchandise. Upon arrival the officer found one suspect, Gabrielle Exantus of 43 Ewing Avenue, Spring Valley, NY at the location with a three month old child in a carriage. Another suspect, Shanavia Labbay of 43 Fred Hecht Drive, Spring Valley, NY had fled the scene. Ms. Labbay is the mother of the three month old child. The suspects had placed merchandise into the bottom of the carriage and then left the store. Ms. Labbay was subsequently arrested.
Each party was charged with Endangering the Welfare of a Child and Petit Larceny. Ms. Labbay was additionally charged with Abandonment of a Child.
The parties are currently in custody awaiting arraignment. The child was taken into custody by Child Protective Services and placed with a relative.
