VALHALLA — The Jewish Heritage Festival of Westchester, held Sunday evening at the base of the Kensico Dam, is a festival in transition.
It’s got a new name – from 1974 until this year it had been known as the Yiddish Music Festival – and a new lead organizer: the Westchester Jewish Council.
And it has a goal: to get a lot bigger.
“We really hope next year to make this the Jewish Woodstock,” said Elliot Forchheimer, the Jewish Council’s executive director. “So stay tuned.”
For the moment, though, longtime attendees worry that the festival’s numbers are dwindling. Sunday’s event, which featured several klezmer groups, drew several hundred guests — enough to provide hearty applause at the end of each song but not enough to fill the vast plaza.
Local politicians and their campaign volunteers turned out in droves, but there were no food stalls serving traditional fare.

We’ve all heard the expression “shop the perimeter of the store.” But if you skip the middle, you’re missing out on a wealth of wholesome, delicious food choices. Your supermarket shelves are filled with hidden treasures that you shouldn’t pass up. Like beans, one of the most neglected and under-valued items.
Beans provide myriad health benefits, and they fit into several different food groups: Although they are rich in complex carbs like breads and starches, as a plant-based food, they feel right at home in the vegetable group, offering an array of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, like their veggie companions. They can also hold their own in the protein group, supplying protein aplenty. Unlike some other members of this group, beans provide little to no fat and are cholesterol-free. In fact, beans actually lower cholesterol and triglyceride levels instead of potentially causing them to increase, as some animal proteins have been shown to do.

The New York Metropolitan Transportation Council on Monday unanimously approved a nearly $5.5 billion proposal this morning to build a new Tappan Zee bridge.
County executives’ votes at the Manhattan meeting were crucial for the project to qualify for federal funds.
Under the current plan, the bridge will have a dedicated bus lane during rush hours but plans for a commuter rail line or bus mass transit were dropped.
“There’s been 10 years of study, hundreds of public meetings, and finally we’ll begin to move foreword. The bridge is outdated; it’s unsafe; residents of Westchester and Rockland and Putnam deserve better, and it’s an important economic lifeline for all of New York State. So it’s a good vote today.”

You’ve heard of Superfoods, but…Superfruits? Not every fruit qualifies. Those deemed “super” by nutrition scientists are packed with antioxidants, fiber, vitamins and minerals, and other nutrients that can help you live longer, look better and even prevent disease.
Best of all, most are widely available, even at your local grocery store, promises Keri Glassman, R.D., founder of NutritiousLifeMeals.com and author of “Slim Calm Sexy Diet”. One caveat: Superfruits are best consumed whole, not processed. So if possible, try to buy and eat these fruits fresh. Experts estimate that you should be eating five to nine portions of fruit or vegetables a day, and most of them should be Superfruits.
Açaí Berries
Açaí actually deserves some of the hype it gets, thanks to weapons grade antioxidant levels that clobber other Superfruit rivals like blackberries, strawberries and blueberries. However, because this tiny berry hails from Brazil, it’s not easy to find fresh. “I recommend powdered açaí berry, which can be added into a smoothie,” says Glassman. “Not only is this an easy way to get super fruits into your diet, but it also helps mask the tart, sometimes bitter taste.”

The county executives from Rockland and Westchester counties have just announced that they will be formally supporting the state’s planned Tappan Zee Bridge replacement project.
Their support, the executives said, will help New York State in its efforts to get federal funding for the multi-billion-dollar project to replace the outdated Tappan Zee Bridge linking Rockland and Westchester.
That support comes after getting assurances from Gov. Andrew Cuomo that efforts will be made to ease the impact of likely toll increase on local residents and works and to ensure mass transit options are included in the new bridge.
Westchester County Executive Rob Astorino and Rockland County Executive C. Scott Vanderhoef said they reached their decisions only after meeting one-on-one with Gov. Andrew Cuomo about the project.
Putnam County Executive MaryEllen Odell also joined with Astorino and Vanderhoef as they announced their intention to vote yes at the next New York Metropolitan Transportation Council (NYMTC) meeting to include the new Tappan Zee Bridgeproject in the region’s long-range transportation plan.

Everyone is talking about it. Ladino Grill has become the #1, kosher, fine dining establishment. “Our focus is freshness and quality. We don’t purchase any finished products. Everything is made from scratch, right here in the restaurant,” says Ladino’s master chef, Alex Petard (formerly of Jean Georges, Lespinasse, Les Halles, and Boxtree restaraunts).
Speaking of fresh, Ladino has a brand-new, innovative idea that is the first of its kind in the kosher world. Now, there will be a live fish tank on Ladino Grill’s premises. This tank will be filled with 235 gallons of filtered water and will contain freshly-caught, live fish. Trout, black sea bass, and fluke fish will be delivered to Ladino by the Blue Ribbon Fishing Company, which supplies high quality fish to the most upscale restaraunts. Why bring an aquarium to an upscale restaurant, you ask? By having the fish swimming live on the premises, Ladino’s chefs can select a fish shortly before you are served, and do their magic as they present to you a most succulent fish dish, that is as fresh as can possibly be!
